Milk or meat?

I have found that speaking words of blessing and prosperity seem to be what people want to hear. And, of course! Who wouldn’t want that? Yet for all the positive talk and affirming words, are there heart changes taking place?

I think we have become accustomed to getting our ears tickled with pleasant words and not being confronted with our sin.

I know that some are tuning me out even now. I talk often about sin. It’s true. I talk about it often because I see the danger in letting it go unchecked. I’ve experienced it. And, if we can just let our defenses down and be honest with one another, you would probably agree with me that our current world is a concoction of sin that has been let go free and unchecked for too long.

So, what do we do? Scripture tells us.

Hebrews 3:12-14 says, “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.”

We need to get into the Word and fill ourselves with it, digest it, grow, and mature so that our senses can be trained to discern good and evil.

Once we can discern between good and evil we will find our ears refuse to be tickled with what “sounds good” or merely “seems right” to us because we will know what God says. We will stop accepting sin into our life, community, and culture because we will understand the destruction it causes. We will be maturing believers who stand for God’s truth despite the opposition we face.

I pray we will find our joy and peace in God and His word alone and it will change our hearts, empower us to live victorious, and cause us to stand against the enemy and the influence of sin around us.

What will it be? A diet of milk or meat?
