Oh, the Struggle! Part 2

Our struggles are not against flesh and blood, but spiritual forces that combat us as we make our journey in life. This knowledge might help us see our relational struggles in a different way, but is there any way to fight back?

Ephesians 6:13-18 tells us there is. It tells us that because we fight a spiritual battle, we not only have methods to fight against the attack, we are expected to be prepared to do so. There is so much in these few verses, I cannot address it in one post. I will hit a few points, but I am hoping it will just get you interested enough to study the richness of it yourself.

[Eph 6:13-17 NASB] 13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

14 Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS,

15 and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE;

16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

17 And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Notice we are to take up the full armor. Not just a piece or part, but all of it. We are to do this so that we can resist, and having done everything, to stand firm. What is everything we are to have done? The next few verses tell us. In today’s post, let’s just look at the first two mentioned in the passage:

  • Gird your loins with truth – It is like putting on a belt of truth. Soldiers of the day would wear a belt with the armor that helped hold everything in place. This belt also held their sword. It was very important! We are to put on the belt of truth or equip ourself with the knowledge of truth. It is an act of being prepared; readiness for service. When we are equipped with truth, we will see the enemies tactics more clearly and be less apt to blame flesh and blood for what the enemy is doing.
  • Put on the breastplate of righteousness – This has the idea of putting on clothing, sinking into something. We cannot make ourselves righteous. The Holy Spirit does this through sanctification. We are to allow the Spirit to do its work in our life and not resist. When we are sinking in or putting on the process of sanctification (righteousness) we understand we will make mistakes. We are not perfect.

So much here! Starting today, let’s focus on knowing God’s Word and allowing the Holy Spirit to work in us so we can equip ourselves with His truth in readiness for service and preparation for spiritual battle.
